Priming A New 22R For Its First Restart
« on: Feb 04, 2010, 07:08:33 AM »
So I am doing research this morning since I am bored out of my mind.

When I install my new motor, I would like to prime the motor so it won't be started dry. I know on a SBC, your take a drill and prime it through the distributor shaft. How do you prime a 22R? Is it the same procedure? Or do you turn the crank?

You cant prime it like that with the 22re. The oil pump  runs of the crank. Use good assembly oil and pre fill the oil filter.

Also if it doesn't start, dont just sit and crank on it. That will run it dry.
If you see it, its for sale.

What about taking out the spark plugs upon first start up and turning the motor over a few times to get it primed? Or turn the crank over with a ratchet?

I am going to be buying a pre-built motor, so I have no idea how much assembly lube will be used if any.

Also, the filter goes on the motor sideways. I understand about some oil filters having a anti-drain valve, but half of that pre-fill oil will find its way on the side of the block. So filling the filter and getting most of that oil inside the motor isn't as easy as it sounds.

You can tap into an oil galley and pump it in somehow.

I have filled grease guns with oil before to help flush out clogged grease passeges on heavy equipment. Grease guns have 1/8" NPT fittings. Shouldn't be too hard to adapt.

just fill it with oil. sinces it's a new motor you'll have to change out the break-in oil anyway. i think you'll be fine. it's not gonna hurt it.

Last quart of oil is poured over the valves and cam before reinstalling valve cover.   Avoid cam lobes if smeared with assembly lube, but fill the pockets underneath.

Crank over without plugs and distributor sensor disconnected (for no spark and no fuel (EFI)) until oil pressure gauge registers or idiot light goes out.

If carbed, fill up float bowl with gas; if EFI, make sure system has pressurized.

Go for it.
