Which Throwout Bearing do I need?
« on: Jan 15, 2010, 09:55:11 AM »
I have a 1988 Pickup with the stock W56 behind a 22RE. I'm putting in a R151F and I need to replace the clutch.

It has a Centerforce clutch and I think NW Offroad's billet 30# ? flywheel. They came with the truck when I bought it and are 10 years old or more.

I have been told the 88 has a reusable collar that the throwout bearing goes on? I don't know if the Centerforce TO bearing I have in it now used the stock collar or is a complete replacement bearing. Not apart yet, I'm still driving the truck.

The 89 and up clutch kit looks to be the same except for a unit type TO bearing instead of the type that needs the reusable collar.

What TO bearing or kit would I need? I have the fork that came with the R151F if that matters. Don't know if its different from the original W56 type.

I am considering Marlin's 1600# non ceramic kit.

Ive never played with the R's but just messaure the tip of the input shft and the W and R. If they are teh same, use the old one, If they re different you will need to use one for the R. You will then need to check the OD of the bearing and check the hole in the Crank. If they match just use the R. If not, you will just need to call you local bearing house and tell them your messaurements and oder one up!
If you see it, its for sale.

The pilot bearing is the same. It's the TO bearing I'm not sure about.

I don't know if the Centerforce setup that is on now used the original Toyota collar or if it got tossed. If it did, I will need to find one so I can use a stock type or Marlin clutch kit.

I'll just start pulling it in the morning. My W56 is getting ready to die and I have to get moving with my swap. I was hoping to have a clutch ready to go also.

I'm not sure what to get so I'll swap the trans this weekend and see exactly what TO bearing I have. I know the trans will swap right in with my Centerforce setup but it's very old and slipping under load.

If I still have the stock collar, I just have to order Marlin's clutch kit. If not, I'll have to find a collar too.

I really don't want to put a fresh trans in behind a slipping clutch but I won't know what I need untill I pull the trans and look. I was hoping somone here could help me out.

It's my daily driver so I can't leave it down untill I get a clutch. Kinda sucks to have to pull the trans again later to put in a clutch though.

Thanks for the input zippo. I got the R151F swapped in finally. I didn't have the stock collar for the TO bearing so I had to clean up my greasy leaked on ancient Centerforce and reuse it till I get my new clutch sorted out.

I'm amazed it isn't toast. It slipped once or twice going to work when I nailed the throttle but otherwise held up completely covered in gear oil. I cleaned it up with brake clean and orange citrus degreaser, blew it dry, and hit it with a hand sanding block.

I put the pressure plate in a 5 gal can of carb cleaner for a while and hosed it off. Another rinse in orange cleaner and hit it with the sanding block even though it wasn't burnt. I crossed my fingers and put it back together. The flywheel looked good too. I still degreased it and hit it with the sanding block.

I took it out and tryed to get it to slip. It's holding up for now. No slip at all. Don't know how long though. I'm only running 31's, 4.56's and a mild 22RE so it's not exactly a torque monster anyway.

I will post pics of my 1988 Pickup W56 to R151F swap later if anybody is interested.
