What is this?
« on: Jan 04, 2010, 10:04:15 PM »
Ok...1984 P/U 4WD Single Cab Short Bed.

Mounted to the frame just behind the axle is what looks like a brake line distribution block. From that is a peice of solid wire that runs down to the axle. WTF is this? The only thing I can think of is a load sensing proportioning valve...thingy.

If no one as any idea at all what Im talking about Ill post some pics up tomorrow.

You are correct. That is the load sensing valve on the frame. The rod adjusts the valve. The more weight you have in the bed causes the rod to go up and adjusts for more brake in the rear.

so if you lift the suspension 3 inches you need to extend the connector that the rod hooks to the axle with

If you run large tires they become less effective so in those cases you can either remove it or lock it in the open position. If you put it in the down position it will restrict flow and reduce braking which is a bad thing. On stock tires you would be constantly locking up the rears before fronts and that is also bad.

i removed mine many years ago,

you can easily take the rod loose from the axle and zip tie it to the bottom of the bed or frame
