cheap SAS
« on: Nov 15, 2004, 12:46:07 PM »
I am wanting to do a cheap SAS for my truck in the next yeasr or so.  I would like to start collecting parts now though.  I will probably be getting a lot of stuff at pcik and pull, or at least as much as i can.

What do I need??

 :shudder: cheap...
brake lines, steering(prefer x-over), driveshaft, springs, axle(gears and locker), brakes, spring hangers and shackles.  :headscratch: grinding discs, sawzall blades, welder, torch or plasma cutter. I think that is just about it. I've done 4 and none have been very cheap.
That's how I roll

High steer cuz you already have the ifs box.  You could get new rear springs for better flex and put your rear spings in the front with some extra leafs added.  Make a crossmember/hanger for the front.  Shackles and frame jig for the rear part of the front springs.  Torche or plasma cutter, welder, grinder with cutting and grinding discs, measuring tape is a must have.  Axle and then driveline mods.  not too much money i guess.  of course looks cheaper on paper.

Front Springs
Front Hanger
Tubes
frame Jigs
Shackles
High Steer or Crossover Steering
Brake Lines (or else relocate your existing ones)
Front U-Bolts and plates or a Flip Kit
Shocks
Shock hoops
Steering stabilizer
Bumpstops

You also might want to get wheel spacers, a front axle, gears, a locker, vented rotors, Longfields/Bellfields/etc., a drive shaft, bigger tires and rims (unless your current ones will work good enough).

For the rear you will need:
Springs
Shocks
an extended brakeline (if necessary)
Possibly a U-Bolt flip kit
Gears to match the front
Possibly a locker
Depending on what springs you go with, you might need:
Front or rear hanger and possible a different set of shackles.

If you plan on bumping your tire size bigger than 33" then you should re-gear. Most of this stuff can be found online in used condition cheaper than just buying a kit. Also, it's ben my experience that the cheaper you go, the more work/ fine tuning you will have to put into your final project. Rears up front will work, but you may have to take the pack apart a few times in order to find the pack you like. If you can't weld very good, find someone who can, and have them help you.

Easy huh?

Cheap is a relative term. Marlins COMPLETE kit is hard to beat. Onestop shopping. I am capabel of fabricating what it would take to mount the springs but its not worth it. That part of marlins kit is cheap enough its just not worth the time. The rest of his kit is just a collection of the rest of the parts you need. Your going ot be hard pressed to beat the price and come up with anything any better.
