Gears for everyday use and wheelin.
« on: Nov 22, 2009, 11:32:16 PM »
I know this post had probably been done before, but I was wondering what would be the best gears to run in my toy. It's a daily driver on 35's any suggestions?

I had 5.29's and 37's, and it was a little too high.  I never used 5th.  So i would think that would be a great ratio for 35's

I like 5.29s for everything from 33" on up.  They are still economical with 33s but will work well for 35s and 37s as well.

what would be the downside of running 5.29s with 33's bc right now im running 32s and stock 4.10 gears and going up a hill at 60 mph i have to stay in 3rd gear bc if i shift into 4th it bogs down and i lose speed and same when im down in the valley if im going down the freeway at 65 mph and im in 5th and i hit the slightist hill i have to shift down into 4th to keep my speed up and to pass someone i have to shift into 3rd in order to get enough power to speed up to pass them

I ran 5.29's with 33s for a couple months and it wasn't bad.  It ripped around town pretty good..  :haha:

with 5.29's and 40's i can use 5th gear, but it may just be cause of the 3.4L, i do not know.

I run 35"s and 529's and have never looked back. I like using 5th gear to hum along at 3200 rpm and 70-75mph with the a/c running.

I'm getting 17-19 average. I drive it like I stole it 100% of the time so my mileage may be off from other folks. I like when guys ask "You gotta V-6 in that?" I say nope, ol 22r with over 260k and going strong. Especially when I'm pulling my 16' trailer with the toys on it.

If you are staying with 33s forever then use the 4.88s.  If you maybe speculate that sometime in the next few sets of tires you might jump to 35s the use 5.29s.  I've gotten from 17-21 in my '94 with 5.29s running 33s and 35s.

35's just aren't taller they also have more rolling mass than 33's, more mass than the stroked engine can make up for.  It would be a waste of money to run anything other than 5.29's.

i have the same q i work in the mountains at a snow resort(Sierra Summit) but live in the valley (Madera, Ca) and plan on running 32's or 33's.

I am in a very similar boat. I had a set of 34 9.5 that i run in the summer. Stock 4.10 would get me going but kinda sucked. I also run a 32x11 in the winter (nice snow tires). In the winter driving to the mountian (mt hood) 3-4 times a week sucked. I would rev the poop out of 3rd to get up there with all the subbies. So my decision was based on running bigger tires in the summer and needing to get up a long hill allot in the winter.

So i got 5.29's. With the 34's i feel the runner drives very well everywhere. I recently put my snow tires on and i drive in town in 3rd gear. It almost seems to much gear. But on my first few trips to the mountain this year the 5.29/32" combo was beautiful. I don't need to hit 5000 rpm trying to get on the first chair. I feel that it is a very good combo with my 22re to get me up in the winter. All of this was great and im very happy except i needed to take a 300 mile trip to my parents house for turkey day. I was a little scared that i would be stuck on the highway going 50mph. That would have not been any fun. Well in my opinion the trip was a success. I ran cruise control the whole way between 3000 and 3500 rpm. Calculated it out and it was 70-75 mph which is pretty much as fast as i need to go in the runner. I also calculated my gas mileage once i got down south and using mile markers (not trip odo) and gas station fill to fill (not tank level) i made 22mpg on my trip. Very unexpected. I thought it would suck on the highway with my current combo but it proved itself to me.

edit: just looked back and i thought id add that my truck is a 94 runner. My winter mountain trip is about 80 miles one way. And i believe it is about 4500 ft elevation gain from my house to the ski parking lot. Also i have no experience with 4.88's in a toy so i can't say they wouldn't do the trick going to the mountain.

Just drop a stock 2.7 in there instead.  The problem with the 22 series is that it has almost no power outside of a small sweet spot, so there's nothing you can do short of massive re-gearing and tweaking to get it to run right with tires(ie - you have to chose one tire size and gear it for that, almost).  A 2.7 or more modern engine has enough power to just not care, or get away with a few inches difference before your re-gear.

edit- that said, 4.88 is the proper ratio for your setup.

4.88 for sure it will be the best way

If you already did the swap then run 5.29s, if you haven't yet save some coin and run a 3rz or 3.4v6 and 4.88s.  The power band on those motors would be able to pull higher gears much better. No 22 series motor will touch a 3rz or 3.4v6.

This isn't necessarily true.  Like Halladay, I've had a 22r that just flat got it.  It was in my 81 2wd, and whenever friends who'd owned 2wd toys rode in it they all said the same thing, "this engine is not stock!".  It later sacrificed it's engine for my 80 4by, and all the way up till the end it ran like a raped ape, even with about 370,000 miles and no rebuild, still had over 150psi in each cylinder too.  Unfortunately, for about 1.5 years I ran it with a bad head (eaten away from electrolysis) and coolant constantly mixing in the oil, so eventually a bearing let go in the bottom and I yanked it.

I'm now running a .60 over 20r block with the same head, which is a few cc short of a stock 22r block, and the power nothing compared to the old engine, despite only having around 35,000 on an atk rebuild.
