Transmission Help
« on: Nov 15, 2009, 08:18:52 PM »
I have a 5 spd transmission in my 1980 toyota and It likes to pop out of first and thrid.  I have replaced the bushing at the base of the shifter and it still has been popping out.  I was wonderingt what actually holds the shifter in gear?  I dont have any problems with the other gears popping out so their should be some part that just needs to be replaced in their.  Does anyone know what has to be done to fix the problem?  :)

more than likely it needs new input shaft and rear main bearings, not to mention if its ever been forced into gear it may need a shift fork

if you can afford it, i highly recommend the Marlin L52HD,  its got the insides of a later heavier made transmission in the short cast iron case that came in the early trucks (except the 79)

I have one in my truck and its insanely strong

time for a rebuild.  I did not have the money for the Marlin heavy duty when mine went out last.  I have been running redline synthetic in it and it has held up for 100K.

Yea I think I'm just goin to live with it popping out. It's been doin it since I bought the truck 2 years ago and hasn't gotten any worse. Maybe one day ill have the $$$ for a rebuild. Thanks for the info.
