I NEED HELP!!! 96 Dodge Ram 1500 4x4 5.9liter v8
« on: Dec 10, 2009, 06:17:54 PM »
SOO.... my g/f was driving her dodge down the road yesterday and it all of a sudden just quit running... she could get it to start but not stay running... she had it AAA'd home and i got home and it started right up... i let it warm up and i drove down the road fine for about a couple mins then on the way in the driveway it started to bog down....

when the truck is in Park and in Neutral it will run around 15 volts judging by the gauge
when i turn the stereo, Headlights, and heater on it will bog down to around 14 volts i give it some gas and it will boost up...
Now with all of these things on and i drop it into Reverse or Drive the gauge slowly drops down to about 12V and if you give it gas when driving it will creep up in Volts and then when you let off the gas it will sometimes die.

I've checked all the plugs
cleaned the terminals
I've pulled the Positive off while the truck is running and it will run the exact same... which makes me believe the alternator is fine.
The truck revs perfect no sputtering or anything.

ITS LIKE REVERSE AND DRIVE ARE KILLING THE VOLTS.... AND I DONT GET IT!!!! HELP!!!!!  :disturbed:

Could be a short in the battery, a piece of the plate may have broke off and is moving around.

Have you tried trading the Dodge for a Toyota?  Might work. :disturbed:

Where did you get the alt? I seen many  many times they are bad off the shelf. Some guys have gotten 3 or 4 bad ones in a row
