Marlin 5" rear spring install
« on: Jul 04, 2009, 09:42:54 AM »
83 toy long bed. I'm wanting to install Marlins 5" rear springs and am looking for someone with a ton of how to pics and step by step instructions. Also, with Do's and Don'ts too. I have NWOR 4" spring with a 2" block in the rear. 6" spring in the front. I've had them (front and rear) for about 4yrs and am ready to change them out. My kidneys can't handle them anymore. My p/u is a daily driver 80% of the time. I do haul a 16' utility trailer with 2 toys on the back on occasion.  I've thought about chevy 63"s too but, I dont want to run the blocks anymore. Unless that's a plus???? Have fun with this one guys! My eyes and ears are wide open for suggestions and comments.

What do you want to know? They are a good spring and they flex well. You do not say what year it is so depending on the year depends on how much work will be involved. Earlier years require welding both front and back hangers on, later just the fronts. Tack weld the hangers and set it on all four wheels to make sure the shackle angle is right before fully welding the hangers. You will need to drop the fuel tank to weld the front hanger on the PS unless you like welding next to a fuel tank bomb. Remember these are springs that are designed for flex so they are somewhat soft.

changing springs is pretty simple all u need is a welder, torch, grinder, plum-bob, and a tape measure.  i have an 86 p/u ya there are differences but most of it is commonsense
86 sas'd 22rte, 37 mtr's, 64" Diamond in front with 30spl Longs and Toyota ifs rear with 3' spacers(i try not to think about that part), with 5.29's Aussie front and ARB rear, twin stick 23spl Duals with 4.7 kit in the rear, 4" trail gear springs, 11" bob, custom front and rear bumper,  Best quote of the year: "its so cool, i cant even black out" - (travis shull)

the directions are pretty good but i had to place the rear most shackle hanger in a different location the what is on the directions. So just tack both the hangers and put some weight on it and check the shackle angle. When everything is good burn it in. :beerchug:

i finally got around to it today.  i will try and get some pics up.  well i have the 5" marlin springs and i found that it rode too high in the rear even with the 4 1/2" shackles.  from the bottom up i took out the #1 and #3 spring.  it rides perfect, nice and smooth and flexes perfect.  if i need to i will add the springs back in but i wanted to give you a heads up that if you run into the same problem by taking out these springs makes it ride even and not as rough.

I recently installed 4" Marlin springs.  They seemed to ride rough and sit high at first, but after a weekend of hard wheelin, they settled in a lot.  The truck rides a like a caddy now   I'm glad I didn't start taking leaves out.
