Please Help - Head Gasket Discrepancy - 84 22R
« on: May 30, 2009, 10:50:36 AM »
Maybe someone could assist.  84 22R running Hot.  I removed the Head and found some of the water outlets on Head and matching block not knocked out on Head Gasket.  The Head Gasket was third party.

See Gasket below, marked in red not knocked out on head gasket.  Would this cause the engine to run Hot? Has anyone noticed this discrepancy? I checked ebay, many 22R head gaskets lack these knockouts.

Does Factory Toyota head gasket include these knockouts?

Thanks in advance for any information.

Interesting.  Thanks good source of information.
The diagram shows additional knockouts, just not sure how accurate the diagram is.  looks like a sketch.

Still not sure if this is cause of heating problem.  Deffently going with a Toyota Head gasket though.

I don't remember if they had the cutouts or not.  There are some places on the OEM where it doesn't.  I only the OEM's by the way.

i just need to order the Toyota gasket and see what's going on.  maybe carefully drill the gasket openings larger. or drill additional openings.  just and idea.

Just out of curiosity, are you sure it's running hot?  I have two 84's and both temp guages are broken.  It goes strait up to almost red line hot as soon as I turn them on.  ive checked the wiring, and replaced the sensors to no avail.

just food for thought.

i looked into this a few years back, the holes in red arent supposed to be open, i was told the holes are in the block to allow the sand when the blocks were cast to be washed out

i DID punch a head gasket out one time where you have the red and ran it BUT  i burned up my number 4 piston,  the way the water goes thru the engine it comes out the bottom of radiator into engine, thru the wp, flowing thru the block towards the rear of the engine where it comes up into the head and flows back towards the front

it is a slight side of the cylinder uptake where you see the water jackets around the block

I only run Toyota  or Rock Product head gaskets

Actually, I think the sensor could also be bad, way sensitive.  But, I have several Toyota's with similar engines.  I can run my 1980 on idle, with the radiator cap open and it will never boil over.  My 84, if I run on idle without the radiator cap, it well begin to boil over after about 10 to 15 min
's

my 84 if i run with radiator cap open.  i can see that the thermostat begins to allow water to flow to the radiator almost instantly.  my 80 will take approximately 5 to 10 minutes before allowing for water to circulate though the radiator.

Thanks for the explanation about the sand and casting.  It makes sense.

You write "burned up my number 4 piston" do you believe that was due to you punching additional water outlets?  What is a burned piston? i've never heard of that.  i've heard of a burned valve.
