I've run mine welded f/r through the con and back around to Loon from the Tahoe side and haven't had any problems :thud: They've probably got 4 runs total between the Con and MoonRocks and haven't had any problems. Just gotta play nice that's all

Ty for the info.

Would they wind out running 5.71s with 35s?

Not for me it didn't, but I don't know if the toy trans/engine would make a difference.  I think I did about 55 at the top speed but that's cuz the rabbits under the hood were getting tired :thud: and I had a bunch of rigs to keep up with.

I think the writer of the gear installs article missed one important point.  That is, while he may be correct about each individual tooth being stronger, The lower ratios, Higher numerically actually have less tooth contact.  That is less teeth contacting at any given time.  This being due to the smaller dia. of the pinion.

yes the pinion size (diameter) is decreased to allow for the lower ratios. the smaller the pinnion gear the less the strengh and decreased surface area in contact with the ring gear. if you drive really reserved they should last. dont ask me about that. i have managed to shear a rear axle and blow a 4 88 ring and pinnion

They are the weakest of them all.  They wear out in about 60.000 - 100.000 km.  Used them from 1999 to 2008, used two sets in that period, and most people here consider that alot.  Used Precission gears.
Got 5.29's now even tho the tires are bigger than before.  History states that the 5.29's are bunch stronger.

Cheers.

I kinda think there may be a reason the everyone runs 5.29s, not 5.71s. If 5.71s were the best, dont you think that would be the gear everyone buys???

I believe many of the problems come from poor workmanship. Set them up correctly and you should be fine. As with anything that gets used in a abusive manner parts get blown up eventually. We set up 5:71's in my bros. truck with 38.5 sx's and worked great with no issues for about 4 years till he sold it. I am in the southeast so we contend with lots of muddy rocks/ledges where the throttle can get used kinda heavy. We used Precision in the front axle Yukon in the rear. my :twocents:

I don't believe this to be the case.  I think most buy 5:29's because a lot of people don't even know 5:71's exist to begin with.

I think you just hit the nail on the head.  It all comes down to workmanship.

i ran 5.71's for about 2 years.  went through 7 sets of them in the rear, and 2 sets in the front.  between all nine sets, i had them professionally installed at 3 different shops because i thought it was worksmanship.  running 5.29's now that i actully set up myself and have been driving it hard for the past 7 years with the same set.  i actully drive it harder now than i did before.  4 trips to rubicon, 2 trips to hammers, and maybe a dozen trips to last chance canyon and freeway ridge not to mention driving it on the freeway probably 20k miles.  thats just me though.  i'm sure everyone has there own preference and 5.29's are my choice for the toy 8in.

Well 5:29's are my preference also, I have only broken 1 rear set because I broke the axle.I broke my front carrier(lunchbox locker) with no r&p problems. I feel more comfortable with 5:29's so I run them. Let see how long my r&p last with 42's  :willynilly:
