Tranny on '86 truck difficult to shift
« on: Oct 03, 2004, 10:02:02 AM »
For the past couple mornings I've been having problems shifting my '86 truck and basically have to force it into gear. It gets easier as I drive a few miles though and eventually gets back to normal.

My first thought was either my slave or master cylinder was going out. However, pedal pressure remains the same and there are no visible leaks anywhere in the system.

Anyway, I decide to bleed the system and still have the same prob. BTW, I used just about every method to bleed the system (own 3 brake bleeding tools) including the 2 person method.

I had to adjust the freeplay at the pedal all the way out so the rod is only held onto the u-bracket by a thread. This is the only way I can shift w/ the engine running or not.

Also tried my spare master and slave cylinder and still have the same prob.  The pedal and bracket doesn't seem to be cracked in any way too.   PLEASE HELP. I'm going crazy trying to figure this out. ??? :-\\ :(

assuming youve done nothing to your clutch linkage,   have some one get under the truck and watch the slave cyl  with your hand start mashing the clutch and note how far down you mash it befor they see any movement of the slave cylinder

if you have your pedal linkage  on "one thread"  get a longer bolt, cut the head off and use it for the plunger rod

um  you did make sure theres plenty of oil in the transmission :dunno:

Is it hard to get into any gear including reverse?

Done any deep water of mud recently?

If so it's probably a bad pilot bearing.

To begin with, you may have the clutch slave cylinder push rod adjusted too tight against the piston. If the push rod is preloading the clutch slave cylinder piston, the compensating port may be blocked which would trap the fluid in the line and slave cylinder.

You should be able to gravity bleed the system by removing the resivor cap and opening the bleeder on the slave.
It sounds like you have the push rod adjusted too far.

Using the butt of your hand, check to see if the clutch fork will move forward and push the piston in the slave clinder that will push the fluid up into the resivor of the clutch master cylinder. If it will not move, shorten the push rod length.

A proper adjusted clutch push rod will have a small petal freeplay but still allow the fork to more reward by hand.
I weld an additional nut on top of the factory nut to extend it if needed.
