3VZ-E to 22RE
« on: Mar 21, 2009, 07:49:28 PM »
I own a 1988 Toyota Hilux 4Runner, and it has the factory 3VZ-E V6 and I hate it with a passion. My friend and I have thought about swapping in his 22RE from his Runner to my Runner. He says it is not a big problem to do it, but I think other wise, so if you have any advise or warnings please let me know.   ,Cheers

biggest problem is dash harness, and you will have to use the re's trans
which might create a dl problem

I say drive the 3.0 till its done for, then do the swap

the swap will deff be worth it.
also do you have smog where you live?

ive done the swap twice,  i used the motor/transmission/t-case and swapped in the entire wiring harness.  it was a pain, but worth it in the end.  u will have to mod the motor mounts, the v6 ones are a few inches back from the 22re's

I say it is a lot of work for not much gain.  Why not a 5vze, or a 3RZ?  If they are just not available where you are then I guess it may be worth it.  Why not take the time and money to rebuild your 3.0?  Beleive it or not, as slow as they are, they are still faster than a 22re.  Plus there are a ton of them available for parts.  At least here in California.  I know the 22re is more reliable, and easier to work on.  But I think you would find that if you took the time to completely go through your 3.0.  Use quality parts.  You could be happy with the 3.0 in the end.  My brother has a 3.0 with 210K on it.  I did the heads about 10 years ago, had DOA machine them, and it runs great to this day.  It would take my 22re any day.  Now I have a 3.4l that will blow it away though.
