'85 solid axle inner seal replacement
« on: Nov 16, 2010, 11:01:01 PM »
Hi,

I am about to put a 5.29 ARB 3rd member on my front axle. I was hoping to just take the spindle off, slide the axles out and replace the inner axle seals from inside the diff housing. I have bought the MC HD inner axle seals and they have a lip. I guess that means they need to be installed from the outside ends of the axle?

Thanks,

Michael

take your knuckels off   .  the inner seal is closer to the knuckel    not  the diff

You have to pull the Birfields and axles to replace the diff so pull them all the way out and replace the seals. You do not have to take off the knuckles but now would be a good to clean and pack the trunion bearings.

Here is a link to doing the front-end on a 79-85 (to 95 if in Europe) Toyota. It is from the FSM.

If you are not replacing the trunion bearings make sure you keep track of where the shims. Personally, I would order a rebuild kit from Marlin and re-do the whole front end.
If you are running stock Birfields and wheeling, it is a good thing to know how to work on these front-ends. :smack:

Hi,

Thanks for the info.

I was planning on just re-greasing as much as I can, the SAS conversion was fairly recent compared to the rest of the truck.

Cheers,
Michael
