Topic: Is 300,000 too many miles on a 3.4?

I have the opportunity to buy a 1996 4Runner Limited.  It has the rear diff locker, pwr everything, Black paint, great body....  But has over 350,000 miles on it.  It has the 3.4 v6 with an automatic tranny.  The owner drove it to and from work over an hour away so mostly highway miles..  He said make him an offer...  But still how many miles are too many?

Seriously, I could probably get it for $3500, but that is alot of miles.

Thats kinda what I was thinking...  So hopefully not everything starts going down at once..  Engine, tranny, rear diff...  I guess those would be the major parts that get worn out with highway miles

Depends on whether he was dealing with rush hour type traffic, or if he was driving at a steady speed the whole way.  It is better to run 350K miles at 65 than it is to have 350K miles of stop and go traffic.  Acceleration, deceleration, and the actions caused by the two in the mechanical pieces are what wear vehicles out quickly.  It is less work on the vehicle to stay at one steady speed.

its approaching 400K. thats a ton of miles. the car is also 13 years old. i wouldnt pay more than $3000 for it. who knows how much life is left in that auto.

$3K seems good, because honestly, the auto trans is likely to not last a whole lot longer.(I'm assuming it's been replaced at least twice)  Now if it's the original automatic with that many miles, I'd offer him $2500 because it's for sure going to die soon.

Ye, over 300,xxx miles on it, origional everything as far as I know.  I think that is way too many miles especially for something to be driven daily.  Maybe for a project it would be a good deal. 

I've decided to go with a 1999 4Runner Highlander (sport), with 170,xxx miles for $4,500.  I have to go to the east coast to pick it up, but still it has half the mileage on it.
