double cardan(?) noises
« on: Sep 16, 2004, 10:31:49 PM »
k. here's the deal.  I've rebuilt every thing under my 84 truck mostly because it needed it; But also because I've been chasing expensive noises and solving mysteries.  The last noise to fix is one that appears when locked in four wheel and engaged in four wheel hi and rolling under power.  it is kind of a bumping clunking noise.  Take it out of 4wheel w/ wheels locked--no noise.  Engage 4wheel w/ wheels unlocked- no noise.  does this sound like the double cardan joint? note that everything else has been built-even the front slip yoke and u-joint. anyone? P.S. I think the P.O. replaced the u-joints in the cardan joint but they may be "out of phase" - not sure what that means or how to fix that :_oops:

Is there any chance that you have the noisy T-case? It came in carbed trucks AFAIK. Run quiet T-Cases came in with the w56. From what I've been told, the noisy T-Case gears sounds like you have a couple of rocks being tumbled around in you T-Case.

hmmmm it does sound like a couple of rocks tumblin.  Is there a solution for that or do I have to live with it?  I've had two t-cases in it.  is it possible they could both be noisy?
