newb block height question
« on: Jan 23, 2009, 01:26:29 AM »
So here is my dumb question.  I've got a 85 22RE 4Runner.  It has a mild oil leak (more of a slow seep) on the driver side mid block between the head and block.  I'm assuming its coming from the head gasket.  I also tried the 'ol "pull the timing chain cover without pulling the head" trick to deal with a chain tensioner that wasn't getting oil pressure.  Of course I effed up the head gasket when I put the timing chain cover back on and now I have a major oil leak coming from there.

The problem you ask?  The engine is a rebuilt bought through Napa.  It came with every thing new including a new head installed.  Only the block was used.  When I go to replace the head gasket, how do I know if the block was ever decked when it was rebuilt thereby needing a thicker head gasket/shim?  Is this something I even need to worry about?  Or do I have no idea what I'm talking about and just making an ass of myself here?

Thanks for the info.  Don't worry about that little 12mm bolt, I won't forget it.  There was an "incident" involving that little b*std, on a previous engine rebuilt, that I won't be soon to forget.
