2wd to 4wd
« on: Sep 08, 2004, 04:29:44 PM »
ok i have a 2wd and want to turn it into a killer 4wd crawler.. it is a 90 regular cab.... i was wondering if the 2wd frame has the same dimensions as the 4wd because i was wondering if the solid axle swap kit would work on this frame?? also will a 4wd tranny bolt right up to the 4 cyl  engine out of a 2wd and can you use the 2wd clutch? what year or model tranny should i get? anyone ever do this swap?? if so let me know of any problems you encounterd etc... you know what i mean.... oh and i know that toyota had chain and gear driven t cases... is there a better gear driver one out there than another of are they all the same?? thanx guys!!!
91 std cab, flatbed, 35 mtr's, aussie, 5.29's, 4.7's, twin sticks

Go to the Project research and build up section and look at "$300" thats pretty much exactly what White Trash did (to his 2nd truck ) all the info you could possibly need is in that thread.

I'm doing the same thing to an 86 2wd. The frames on the 2x's actually have a larger bump in the frame rail above where the axle mounts than a 4x IFS truck. So the 2x4 frames are actually more like a 4x from the early eighty's. For a tranny, look for a W56. If you are real lucky, and stumble across a turbo tranny, then go ahead and buy it as they are fairly strong, and fairly rare. Look for someone parting out an IFS rig, and buy the rear axle, tranny, t-case, E-Brake cable and set-up, and anything else you will want for doing the swap.
