Front Drive Shaft
« on: Jul 10, 2008, 05:15:40 PM »
I found a 1985-86 solid axel 4runner by were i live....my question is will that front drive shaft bolt on to my 1980 toyota pickup? I took it to a 4x4 shop and they said it would coast me $535 to repair my cv joint on the drive shaft. The one at the junk yard looks good and so does that front axel, real good conditon. Im thinking the used front drive shaft will be alot cheaper and will bolt up sence both trucks are stock with solid axel. I havent measured them thought ........

$535 ??  OMG  they were trying to rape you  NEVER GO THERE AGAIN

it can work, but  you will need to shorten it,  this can easily be dont  by using a  hand grinder to remove the weld  from the cv end of the driveshaft tube

whats wrong with your 80 shaft??  cv floppy ??   if you can change a u joint  you can rebuild that cv joint

i made a post about a month ago about my truck making noise in the front and thought it was the front axel ... but i took it to the 4x4 shop and they said the axel is fine except for leaky seals,  but they said the front drive shaft cv joint is bad and that they were going to need a kit and have to weld it on .... i never saw the kit they were speaking of but i think the u joint is floppy cause it makes that ticking sound when i turn going forward....=/

good

ok, the cv rebuild kit  is  easy to do, since i see you swapped in a L52

juststart by removing the ujoints  same as you would any ujoint,  then the cv  will come apart

to rebuild the cv  theres no welding involved

they just didnt know how to rebuild the cv joint

Duffil is a member here and works for NAPA, he can give you the part number for the parts, (basically a ball a little smaller than a golf ball  and a brass socket)
then you need 2 u joints also

OK i take it that the cv joint we talk about is actually called the double carbon joint and the other side the joint is called spider bearing ( u joint)? Any how the manual says if any problems are found with the double carbon  to replace the front propeller shaft assembly, but it does show how to replace the spider bearing....

by your post Im not sure which driveline you want to build...the 79-84s use a Precision 613 and the 85+ use a 614 for the ball kit.

FWIW, Jesse @ High Angle Driveline has told me he never messes with repairing one, he just gets a late model unit that is still good and clearances it.

Glen: thanks for the heads up.
