spare tire, 85 runner
« on: Sep 20, 2008, 09:46:31 PM »
i noticed that my spare tire under the rear was loose.  upon closer inspection it looks like it got pushed up and bent the top braces.....hence that's why it was loose.....i had a pregnant dog of a time lowering the spare....not much room between the marlin rear bumper and tailgate....i finally lowered the spare....
i tossed the tire in the back....probably end up ratchet strapping it to the roll bar

question....how and where are you guys keeping your spare....????? :cheese:
86 4runner, I hope my junk makes it.....

I was pretty overwhelmed w/ the responses :shake_head:.....so i just went out and used a ratchet strap and wrapped it around the tire and roll bar....a couple could ratchets down and it nice and tight..... :ladys-man:

I leave mine at camp. lol when I did drive it on the street. I welded a peace of chain in bed of the truck and locked it. Keeps it from flying and the thiefs away.
heres a old pic.

That takes up the whole bed.  Yikes.

Usually on the rollbar, to make room for coolers, sleeping bags, tents, etc in the bed.

My truck doesn't have a rollbar so I have it against the cab, to the side, out of the way as much as possible.  1 ratchet, thought the hole and to the loop in the corner of the bed.

But on my 4runner(also runs 35's)I have a 31"(and thin-10, not 12.5) spare in the stock location.  Neither of my axles are welded(LSD), so it still serves as a way to limp off the trail and get another 35.

My stock spare tire carrier was gone as soon as I got the truck.  A 36" spare will go in the bed of the 4Runner and a cargo rack built above it for spare parts, tools, and camping gear.

I really wanted to build a swing out spare tire carrier off of a rear bumper but didn't like the fact that the weight of the tire is so far back.  I'd much rather put that weight over the rear axle and then deal with the camping gear.
