Heater duct problem (need pics)
« on: Sep 17, 2008, 10:26:58 AM »
I'm trying to put together the heater and duct work on my 82. On the passenger side inside the cab, the is a white gate thing that bolts up underneath the fire wall (has a large accordian tube that connects straight to the heater core). I went to bolt it up, and there is a gap at the top about a half an inch wide where it sits flush with the underside of the firewall. I need to get some pictures of how it bolts up. I looked in the FSM, but it was no help.

If someone could help me out with some pics or advice, I would appreciate it. Thanks.

If no one else gets to it first, I'll take some photos tonight of mine.

That's what I'm looking for, but on mine when it's bolted up, there is a gap at the top where the foam strip sits on yours. My foam was all rotted away, so I put in some new stuff. The gap at the top is like 1/4-1/2" wide between the firewall, and the foam. About how thick is the foam on yours?

Not sure without taking it off. It would seem like you could just get thicker foam, but I'd want to make sure nothing was hung up anywhere causing it not to reach, also.

Here is what I'm talking about. Am I backwards in hooking this thing up or something?

You know, when I look at the two side by side, it seems to me yours is different. Did you buy this, or was it on your truck & you're just putting it back together? I think you've got one from a different model truck or something..best I can think of. It's hard to tell though because of the different angle. That really is weird, I can't see how it would go in any different...

OH! I think maybe you're missing a piece of the dash? My brackets which this thing bolts to hug right up against the firewall or whatever it is up there. Your's are hanging down from the "top" about the distance you need to make up for, there. Think maybe there's some piece that should go on there before your vent? You can see in my photos how the brackets are right against the upper metal part. Yours are hanging down a bit.. see it?

Again, could be a photo angle thing, but...

This is the one that came with my truck. I could potentially put it on top of the flange, but there's a nut welded in on top. I would have to stack washers and use a nut onto or something.

I did. As far as the part being from a different truck, I just called toyota. They only show one part number from 79-83, so it is definently the right part, and there aren't supposed to be any other accessories that go with it. Their suggestion is to get some thick foam from Home depot and start filling it in.

Ok. Huh. I guess I just noticed that it looks like a big piece goes under your dash first maybe. Notice how what the thing it pushes up against is a different color than the brackets (on mine)? The brackets are the color of my truck. That other part isn't. On yours the top is the same color as the brackets. That's why I'm thinking that off color part is missing on yours. I think it's more part of the dash than part of your heater duct...like possibly something you took off & it's laying around the garage somewhere..could be a difference in years, though, yours may be different than mine.

That's all I can think of, but I really don't know what the hell I'm talking about.
