Anyone have a good recommendation for a GPS unit?

Which are good? What to avoid?

Just want it for the trail and road trips

Garmin 60csx. I use it every day for forestry work and for the price is the best I have used.

I run the Garmin 60cs and I love it. Not as fancy as the csx, but less $$ and for most people has ample memory.

Go to Groundspeak forums..that is where I did my research, plus they have classified section.

I bought a Magellan Explorist 500 about Christmas time for my first GPS and although it does everything I want, I wouldn't recommend it. The topo software I got for it isn't user friendly at all and I can't seem to get it to store more than one region at a time even with an added SD card for more memory.

I have the Garmin Rhino 520. It's a full color handheld and a 2 way radio. I use it mostly for hunting but take it when i'm out wheelin just in case.

I really like the Lowrance Baja 540c I have in the new buggy. I just bought one to go in my 4 Runner too. They are rugged, the display and functions are first rate and they were built for off road vehicles. They are pricey (just under $500 out the door) but, you get what you pay for.

Do not buy this for offroad use. It will not track where you have been and if you go offroad it gets confused. This is a great unit for on road use.

I have one of those (nuvi 200) in my tow rig, and a garmin Etrex Vista Cx in my 4runner. The only thing I dont like about the Vista is that it calculates altitude based on the barometric pressure rather than off the satilites. When I mount it on my motorcycle behind the windscreen, as I accelerate it tells me I just climbed 60 feet on level ground

I also have one of the older Garmin Etrex legend's (the blue ones) It works just as good as the Vista, has about twice the battery life and is fairly accurate. only thing the Vista does better is it has some basic routing fuctions built in (only has major highways and interstates) but you can buy the mapsource software for it to be able to do door to door routing but for the price of the software I just bought a new GPS with the maps built in and called it good.

First things first. Always buy Garmin. They are reliable and work great. Nuvi is for on road use only, sucks off road, it just says your out in a field and its as useful as a $200 electronic cumpus. I would prefer the Garmin Rino series for off road use, it has a build in two way radio if your out of your car or don't have a CB, and the feature i love is the fact that if your buddies have a Rino, which mine do, it will display their location on your GPS as well. Its a great tool for hunting, not to mention if your off roading at pismo on a quad and get separated from your group, or on the trail, you can see how far ahead or behind you are from your buddies. The Rino now only comes in a color screen i believe, however you can find the black and white display ones on ebay still. Ebay is your friend...

My friend has and uses both the Nuvi 660 and the Rino 520. I don't know much about using the Rino on road though.
