steering
« on: Jul 22, 2008, 09:01:34 AM »
First off, push pull steering sucks. . . But thats not really my problem. The rod ends on the tie rod have so much play in them its retarded. But as far as i can see the drivers side does not come off the tie rod so i cant just replace the joints. And the reason im not going to hysteer right now is money and im not running any lift right now and would like to keep it that way or very low as im only runnin 33s. . . its a 83 by the way. . . So my question is, is there a.) a way to keep the push pull and tighten my steering back up  or b.) a way to run hysteer with a very small lift? like, less than 2 inches?

I would think that high steer would work just fine with a small lift.

i was told that you need at least a 4'' lift to do hysteer, thats what allpro says anyhow and frontrange offroad fab, you might get by with 3'' but it might be cutting it close.

I got the 3inch buggy springs w/ high steer on it. You may want to look at flipping your j-arm and get a drop draglink. Duffil done a article on it and its real easy to do.

both ends of the push pull draglink have an adjustment,  theres a  cotter pin  and then the end takes a HUGE screw driver (i used a prybar)

just remove them clean  check for damage  and re install

Toyota has a kit to rebuild the ends on the draglink.

If its an early style you may not be able to just unscrew them. I know one of my donor fronts had a setup like that where only one end had threads for adjustment. My 85 front had adjustable ends on both sides of the tie rod.

You can get a custom tie rod built with fj80 tie rod ends and just run the stock push pull draglink. Doing this would make for a stronger setup, and redily avalible tie rod ends. I like the idea of using hysteer the most though. I'm shure you could make it work with a little ingenuity.

Marlink is startin to look like one of the best options right now cause like gittinit was sayin only the passenger side adjusts. . . What hits with hysteer and less than 3 inches of lift? . . . If i had the fab skills/ tools id probably get hysteer and make it work with a very small lift. Because i really want to get rid of that brake steer and that darn torque arm.

if you want histeer to work with little to no lift, i believe you may have to notch the frame and you run into issues with the u-bolt, especially when running a flip kit. Don't quote me on any if this though... i am not completely sure. Maybe someone who has tried it will chime in here.

I think since there is a question on that, you should contact the experts (Marlin Crawler) and ask about it. Most people when doing a crossover have substantial lifts, I'm sure they've had people come in wanting little lift and a crossover.

I asked Marlin crawler about it last year, and they said a 3 inch lift is minumum without modifications. I didn't ask about what modifications had to be done to make it work with less lift, but I remember seeing somewhere in a build maybe :dunno: that if trying to run it with less than 3 inch lift, there are some serious interference issues.
