dual case rules?
« on: Jun 24, 2008, 03:10:01 PM »
Ive been thinking about getting dual cases and/or tcase gears, and I'm wondering what you can and cant do with them. some questions are can you only gear the rear case? for example if i had gears in my tcase and just wanted to add a 2nd crawl box? and do you have to have the lower gears in the rear? just all around general knowledge and "rules" of having and running duals.

you can gear either the front, rear, both or leave them stock.

Don't press the clutch in while engaged in double low while the truck is moving down hill purely by gravity. :nonono:

you can gear either case, but the accepted "norm" is to only gear the rear case, to minimize the amount of parts that see a torque increase...

Also, if you buy your gears and the doubler adapter at the same time, go with 23 spline stuff in the rear case...same price and a bit stronger.

From what I understand, you need the front crawl box to use the same shifter setup as your transmission/t-case setup originally used (foward shift or top shift depending upon transmission), and the rear case must be top shift.

Rule #1 - You will end up at the back of the pack on trail runs.  The Jeep guys hate how slow you can move on the trail  :rofl2:  :ha_ha:

Rule #2 - Jeep guys will be envious of your super low gear ratio after watching you climb up huge rocks without slipping a tire

im pretty sure you dont need a top shift for the rear, you can change out the shift rails and just remove the block off plate and the foward shift becomes a top shift. someone correct me if i am wrong

Umm... that turns it in to a top shift, so yes you need a top shift for the rear. Either way it must be a top shift in the end.

Just wondering, why does this ruin the clutch?

Here's a scenario with purely made up figures....

If you are in 4th gear (1:1 out put) double low at 5k you are going 10 mph

So if you are headed down a hill in 4th and double low and its not fast enough and you hit the clutch with it still in gear figure the clutch disk will be spinning 10k rpm's at 20 mph... the disc will explode in the scenario...
Full hydro, 186:1 with an auto and 44's what could go wrong??

If I start a downhill and the rig starts to slide I grab another gear in a t-case....  If you do it quick it won't grind much.
