waterproof toy's
« on: Apr 21, 2008, 03:37:17 PM »
Am trying to find infomation on how to waterproof these toyotas more. Especailly the wires, electronics, computers, and fuse boxes. any ideas or someone that has done it before?
i read 4crawler's things, but not enough parts covered in that, i know about the axles, and snorkel. Am just thinking it would be nice to have rig that was sealed up and waterproofed somewhat so when i do go in the mud/water/ i do not have to worry.
any suggestions or pics?

seal your coil and distributer, run all breather lines to either an air box or a snorkel

ok so if i use electrial grease on everything i can, and use it on the sealing the distrubuter and coil,
after that, i could, use that black rubber/plastic stuff to cover all of the wires and zip tie them tight or something like that.
maybe put the ecu inside the dash? i heard you could put in the glovebox, but then no glovebox for stuff haha. then the other side the fuse panel on left side could be put inside the dash too... make my own custom snorkel all the way up to the roof.

the only problem i keep thinking about is on the efi engine, if i make a snorkel, i would have to run the snorkel all the time? seems how the stock air cleaner is kinda closed up,
i guess it wouldnt hurt for having a snorkel hooked up all the time.

if you want to go all out do what the mudders do.

run the air intake into the cab, remove all wiring and electrical except for the ignition, fuel, coil, etc and seal everything

I would use silicone on the dist cap. Also, a snorkel is basically a cold air intake, I bet it wouldn't hurt your truck one bit to run it all the time.

umm... just run a cone filter at the top of the snorkel and cut the hole into the bottom of the airbox like it is from the factory. Then use the factory style filter. I see the cone as a prefilter to keep stuff out of the snorkel, and the stock filter as the real air filter. Make sense?

most snorkel setups have some provision to shield it from splashing or rain....

you can actually buy that top piece from ARB

if you are going through deep or splashing water, you can just turn it around.... the engine will get all the air it needs, and it wont force anything in

umm am lost, putting a hole in the stock air filter? is that what you mean, its plastic, i was thinking of just using the snorkel tube to connect it to where the stock tube went, and throw away the stock enclosed filter and tube,
then use some type of filter on the top of the snorkel, like you said cone one.

Hold on a sec, I will make a diagram. This is for a 22re, right? If not I don't think this idea will work.

I am pretty sure that is a 22r in that link, you cannot do that with the 22re because you need the trap door AFM deal to still function that is on top of the air box.

Look at my diagram for a 22re. Here you see the factory set up in red. To do the snorkel, you block off the front air tube that goes into the bottom of the filter assembly. Seal it up good. Now cut a hole in the side of the lower half of the airbox for your snorkel. Intsall snorkel however you want. Put a cone filter at the top to keep stuff out. Keep factory filter in factory location. What this does is it allows the air to be filtered twice (the cleaner the better) and it allows you to keep the factory sensor on top of the air box. Now does this make sense?

yes it makes sense now, it will also make more sense when i do it this summer, i luv your idea kdxsr5, thanks. this should work great, good insight, i was about just but the snorkel tube into that sensor/afm and throw away the factory filter box thingy. but this is a much better idea!

Glad I could help. Show us what you do when you do it, I have never actually done this, it was just a theory of mine that made a ton of sense to me.
