Crank pully grinding HELP
« on: Apr 10, 2008, 06:15:00 PM »
Hey guys, the front seal on my fresh 22re started to leak. I've got it all pulled apart and the seal out. During dissasembly I noticed that there was alot of metal shavings, and upon further inspection noticed that the crank pulley was grinding on the timing cover. The crank, block, timing cover, and pully are all from the same motor. any reason why it would do this, or any suggestions on how to fix it.

 :help:
Thanks,
Shawn

sounds like you are using a  oil pump drive spline  for a  double row timing chain on a  single row chain

You mean the other way around, like I got a single row pump for my double row everything else. the block is an old skool 22r block with double row chain and celica head. I did not personally order the oil pump, is there a difference between the two.

oil pumps are the same,  but  the  dual row chain  has a shorter  oil pump dsrive spline  since it has  to have room for the doublerow chain

the single row chain  is  thinner  so it uses a longer  oil pump drive spline

sounds like something is  wrong,  get pics

Today at work i looked up oil pumps for my truck and found that there are two different oil pumps also. probably because the dual row timing chain cover is thicker, and the oil pump body must be thinner. If anybody has these oil pumps laying around to verify it that would be awsome.

Yeah, I yanknked the seal out already, i'm not sure on the part number for the pump the box got tossed about a year ago when i was building the engine. I'll talk to the machine shop on monday to see. He also ordered me the wrong thrust washers (newer ones are thinner) so its very possible. he did get me metal backed guide without me asking.

the early engines, 81-84 domed top piston engines. have the timing cover thats fatter to accomedate the dual row timing chain and have a shorter oil pump. says right in the melling catalog. New oil pump will be here tomorrow.

Nahh he's a nice guy, he gave me the new one, and hell he gave me the first one too, as well as all the main bearings rod bearing, pistons, rings gasket kit. AND i got to use his shop during my co-op to rebuild the motor.
