Parking brake
« on: Apr 11, 2008, 05:26:25 PM »
I swapped the cabs on my 80 two weeks ago and the new cab didn't have the parking brake, but my old one does. But I can not for the life of me figure how to take it apart to remove it. Any ideas?

2 10mm head  bolts into the bottom of the dash,  2 12mm hold it to the firewall

pull that  and remove it  and  it has a  loop thing at the firewall on the cable  just like the throttle cable does

You have to pull the pin out at the bottom, then the handle will turn more and the cable will come out. Do not twist it or it will break off. Punch it out from the backside with a pin punch.

Could be. The reason I know not to twist it is I twisted mine and broke it off. :gap:. Nothing that a little hillbilly engineering would not fix.

I have done the same....i thought it was threaded in and just started twisting...it broke... but who needs a parking brake anyways. I'd scrap the whole thing and get a line lock.

I got it figured out, after spending some time trying to get it out with a punch I gave  up and just twisted it off. I'll figure out something for it later. Thanks for the info.

I drilled it out and tapped it for a 1/4-20 bolt. Cut the head off the bolt and heated it to red hot and flattened it on the end on my anvil. Ground it to shape it and screwed it in with red loc-tite. Seems to work fine.

For future reference. Above and behind the bracket closest to the handle where handle assembly is bolted to the bottom of the dash. There are two hickies that make the clicking sound as you pull the handle out. They are spring loaded. You have to hold them back out of the notches and the handle will slide back into the tube and allow you to get the cable out.
