Gas in oil
« on: Apr 11, 2008, 02:14:38 PM »
hey guys,

i've got a friend that has a 79 pickup and he told me that one day at 360 or 361 or something like that(i guess it's a trail somewhere), his truck stalled out on a hill. he couldn't get it started again so he rebuilt the carb thinking it  was that but when he changed his oil, he found that he had gas in his oil. i thought it sounded like broken rings or pistons but i'm not sure if anything else could be the problem. it has the 20R and i haven't actually looked at it, i've only talked to him on the phone for 15 min about it. sometime when we both have a weekend we'll look at it and most likely end up rebuilding the whole engine. thanks in advance for any input.
lets not and say we did.

how much gas in the oiul? and what unit of measurement is he using to tell? in an older engine, there might be some blow by allowing some gas to mix with some of the oil..

Mechanical fuel pumps (don't know what's on the truck) can leak gas into the engine

i'm not actually sure how much oil, he just said he had oil in it and he couldn't get it running good. i believe he said the engine had like 500,000 miles on it. i only briefly talked to him so i don't really know a lot of details about the truck. i suspect that it has a mechanical fuel pump since my 84 22R does and i don't think his engine is too modified if at all.

a stock 79 came with an electric fuel pump. if the carburetor was not rebuilt right it could be pumping gas right into the engine.
