first gen radiator
« on: Mar 31, 2008, 09:25:57 AM »
ive got an 83 and the radiator finally cracked after 25 years.  i'm lookin to swap in a 3rz within the year. is there a raadiator that would work well for both my little 22r and the 3rz? . . . any junkyard options?

3.0 V6 Radiator works great in mine... I had to scrap mud / Rust off the frame to make it fit though  :gap:   :outtahere:

i put in a 3 core radiator from a 90's pickup. when i first installed it i couldn't shut the hood. the hood supports hit the radiator before it would shut. i thought about lowering it but then the bottom of the radiator would be below the frame..not good.  so i used some rubber spacers and set it back 1/2 inch closer to the engine. the hood shuts fine now. if you already have a body lift' it well fit with out worry just the way it is.

the 3 row I'm running now has more than enough cooling compaired to the 1st gen 2 row. it was free so I'd don't know exactly it's history other than it came out of a Nevada gen3 22re truck. i think it's the same size as the rad in my v6 94 4runner. I'll put a tape on it tonight and let you know. i just moved it 1/2 towards the engine with no body lift and it fit.

electric fans are cool but i still haven't seen a good clean picture of one installed in a gen one with a 3 row. not alot of room in there once you put in a thicker radiator. and if your planning to install a 2.7 there well be even less room. if i remember right the 3rz rigs do the body lift. even a 1/2 body lift would clear my radiator. easy to do.

i really like the electric fans myself. i have a 16 in. on my 1st gen and its cools great. i have it hooked to a toggle switch and once the temp gauge gets about half way flip it on. about a min. later its cool again. when im on the trail i just leave it on so i dont forget :yikes:...if you go electric i would suggest putting it on a temperature switch so it turns on automatically  :eyebrow:...clutch fans rob a litlle hp too

I have no Body lift   I did make some lowering brackets and it did hang down below the frame, then I put on the  :turtle: Front Hanger.  I also have a electric fan, it works great, I wish I had it on a a thermostat though.    :burnout:

i started to mod my brackets to lower the 3row but then had nightmares about the radiator being a skid pan. so i chickened out and just moved the radiator back. I'm really thinking on lifting it 1/2 to a 1 inch anyway. (make pulling the tranny a lot easier too) then I'll move the radiator forward again and get some more room for an electric fan. anyone got any pic's of their e-fan  install?

so you just moved it back 1/2 in and not vertically at all? and it doesnt hang down any below the frame?

no it's flush with the frame, not below it. i could put the stock skid pan on too. i measure it this morning and it's the same hight as my v6 4runner. 22+ inch's.  some people have also modified their hood supports to make it fit. it's damn close like 1/4 inch clearance..   nice e-fan cookie monster..  what brand/model is it? a lot I've checked out were to much $$.
