Elocker questions - need help
« on: Dec 30, 2008, 09:02:44 PM »
I have an elocker out of an 04 tacoma. My truck is a 95 pickup (not tacoma) 22re 4wd standard cab short bed. I need to know if I can swap my third member with this elocker member without changing axles. If I clearance the axle housing can I make it work? Or do I need to swap out my complete rear end with a later model tacoma rear due to axle spline count ect.? Is the tacoma rear axle housing wider than the older style pickup? Any information would be helpful, also is the gear ratio the same from a 95 p/u to a 04 taco with elocker? 4.10 in my truck I believe. thanks, Chris.

Yep, it'll work.  The Taco axle is around 61- 63" wide compared to your 58" axle.  Ratio could be the same, but may not.  If in doubt, divide the teeth on the ring gear by the teeth on the pinion.  For more info, do a search on Google for "Toyota elocker install."

To install a 8" toyota e-locker 3rd into your housing you will have to make some modifications to your housing. Look up e-locker mod. You could also use the Taco rear end and gain some extra width. If you do that you will need to do some minor modifications to it since the brake lines and ebrake come from the drivers side on a taco, and Pass side on your truck. Do your self a favor and serch, there are plenty of threads on this topic on many different boards.

Thanks guys, I found everything as far as modifying the housing, my only other concern was if the axles will work with that diff. Spline count and size, length, things like that. Thanks again.

Use the axles that correspond to the housing and you won't have any problems.  I have e-lockers at both ends, the rear being an '86 housing, and had no issues installing my axle shafts.
