running lean in my 84 22r
« on: Jul 01, 2007, 07:13:03 PM »
i just picked up a 1984 runner 22r/w56/duals, it ran like poo when i got it, so i cleaned the carb with b-12 liberally, and went through the vacume diagram and tried my best to hook up what was not hooked up.  The vacume lines to the BVSV that also connect to the AAP have broken niples so i cant hook any lines to them so i blocked them off on the aposing ends.  Put in new plugs and wires and she idles smooth, doesnt hesitate of the line and it has no power problems, but my plugs when pulled indicate a lean mixture (pretty white, not coffee colored).  Im guessing vacume leak, and if it is what lines do i need to pay attention to to get the mixture back on track.  Sorry bout the long post!!  :gap:

here is the vacume diagram i used as a guide, it shows the BVSV hooks up to the AAP and two hard lines the right of the carb, i guess to properly hook up the AAP i need to replace the BVSV junction so i have usable niples (haha niples...). Any other ideas to why its running lean??

i cleaned the carb and fixed vacume lines yesterday, ran it for 10 miles or so then swapped out plugs and wires today.  Yesterday the motor ran like poo and plugs showed a rich condition. now its running top notch but when i threw in new plugs the old ones were rather white

actually, the 84 is a little bit different than the picutre above.....

here it is, i got this from someone and actually compared it to fordh8rs 84, and its identical to his

for some reason, the 85 diagram is what is in all the manuals, however the 84 isnt in any of them unless you have the specific 84 manual -- a member here got me this from alldata

which perticular lines should i investigate that would cause a lean condition if leaking or unhooked? :dunno:

when I had to "engineer" a vacuum leak so i would lean out enough to smog, I pulled the thermo valve line, just after the tee to the MC valve.  Leaned out pretty good, it's a direct manifold port.  I would look there, your charcoal canister hoses as well, esp. where it goes onto the carb.

thank you, thats a step in the right direction, i'll take a look at those lines. i am really getting to the point of buying like 25 feet of hose and just giving the whole system a "face lift"

Why not just cap off/remove all lines that don't directly effect running :dunno:  Mine is an 80 and all I have hooked up is vaccuum advance and brake booster, though I am running a weber.  I did have everything hooked up at one time but decided to simlify things a little.

i would cap alomst everything but i got a smog coming up here soon and i live in cali so around here its rather tight on that.  Im going to do my best to replace all lines and route them the way the diagram shows.

Mine ended up being a vaccum leak.  carb to manifold gasket leaked
