The diesel block has the starter on the left, drivers side and a completly differance bolt pattern. On the L45,50,52 trans, a special 2" adapter plate was used to go between the diesel block and the face of a special tranmission housing that used a totally differance pattern then the 22R block pattern.
On the 84 and newer trans with the removeable bellhousing, an aluminun one piece bellhousing was used.
All diesels got the gear driven t-case with a 21 spline input gear.
Non turbo trucks used a G54 trans [forward shifting t-case], and the turbo engines got the W56 [top shifting t-case].
To my knowledge, 85 was the last year for the poor selling diesel trucks in north america.
