22RE Conversion
« on: Apr 30, 2004, 02:08:13 PM »
My friend is about the get a 22RE for his 82 pick-up.  What is involved with this conversion, especially when it comes to wiring.  Can pieces of the newer harness be spliced into the old harness, or does the whole think have to be replaced?  Can we reuse the old dash?

My original conversion from carb to RE was an 1985 Celica (Block deck 1/2" lower) I used an 1987 EFI harness. The only original wiring was from the Wiring conecter under the passenger seat carpet which then drops through the floor and back to the fuel tank (needs to be replaced with EFI tank, pump, wiring) and rear lights. It was not too difficult as I just replaced the harness. You must also make sure the connection to the throttle body matches the harness.

By the way, when he says "Replace the harnesses" What you'll be doing is a FULL harness swap.  That means fenders come off, dash comes apart, and EVERYTHING in the car gets put into the truck.

Now before you kevelch about that, It is a pain in the ass. But when my shopmate and I stopped whining, it took 5 hours for us both to do. Gas tank will need an upgrade, as it only has the low-pressure fuel pump and no fuel return.  That part of the harness is connected with the light harness.  Using a wire to pull the harness through the fenders turned out to work pretty well.

I'm in the beginning stages of a similar project, going from a 22R to a 22RET. It took at least 10 hrs to mark and remove the harness from the donor truck. The motor and fuel tank come out next.

I haven't decided whether to completely swap the harnesses or splice the necessary parts into the old one. Once I get the FSM wiring diagrams for both and compare, I'll know which is easiest. The best thing would be the swap.

Your's may be a bit harder since you are going from one generation truck to another, if the wiring and connectors to the inst panel are the same you should be able to use the orig 82 inst panel and dash. Otherwise you'll have to splice.
