22re misfiring
« on: Jul 16, 2010, 04:19:54 PM »
Hey guys I just replaced my spark plugs in my 22re with Toyota brand ones and they were pre-gapped according to the person at the desk. Now my truck has a pretty bad misfire when its at idle and only at idle. If anyone has any suggestions (replace plug wires?) that would be great. And this wasn't happening before.....

Trusting the pregapped plugs is a bad idea. always want to check them.  Even tho the fsm says to gap to .031 I always gap to .035 on carbed or efi engines.

Stock ignition doesn't need any bigger than .032, higher output will like them opened up.

Ok guys so I checked the new pre-gapped spark plugs, they seemed to be gapped right. So I went ahead and put the old ones back in, replaced the spark plug wires, made sure the wires are not touching the exhaust, and checked the firing order (matched the numbers on the distributor to the cylinders)....still misfiring. ANY MORE SUGGESTIONS? THANKS

Check the resistance of the wires.

Check the contacts on the cap and rotor.

Quick update....it doesn't misfire when I first start it up, but once it gets warm it will start to misfire causing the rpms to go up and down. I have notice it missing a little while driving if I am not giving it gas or right as I shift into a new gear. Thanks guys

I know no one has replied in a while, but it's worth a shot. So, when I changed the spark plugs, I also did an oil change....while I was changing the oil filter I accidentely broke a sensor wire. I'm not sure what sensor it is (it is located by the oil filter a little below and to the left). So, I repaired it (so I think???)..could this be causing the problem (does it not have a good connection??)...I unplugged it and started and it ran like it was before (surging/misfiring). My check engine is not on. THANKS :beerchug:

Below the oil filter is the oil pressure switch and above it to the left is the knock sensor.  If you repaired it then its prob fine and no it wont cause this.   You might want to check the distributor shaft for end play and also the dist. pick up.   Without seeing it in person its hard to say for sure.

You don't have any signs of it having a blown head gasket right?  I'm thinkin not since you said it started happening after you replaced the wires and plugs, but you never know.  No pressurizing of the coolant system, milky oil, did you do a compression test?  Also, really make sure the plug wires are all the way seated on the plugs.

Could it be valves? I have VERY bad ticking (speeds up when I rev engine). I will re-adjust them this weekend anyways...but could this be causing the rough idle (misfire,surge)............or am I starting to think it's a blown headgasket. It's not overheating, and it doesn't really look like there is coolant in the oil. Thanks for your help. I've been busy so haven't been working on it.
