Think i found the culprit
« on: Aug 13, 2007, 05:32:26 PM »
Recently my 22r has pooped on me, i lost almost all compression on my number 2 cylinder. So ive been tearing it apart the last few days. I got down to the oil pan, so i removed it and also went ahead and removed the number 2 piston.

The top 2 rings on the piston were broken into small pieces and just fell off the piston. So im saying that was my problem definatly.

I also have a few more delima's... Before i removed any of the pistons i moved them around in their cylinders and the piston would move back and fourth, left and right, and also clockwise and counter clock-wise. Now i know the left and right ,and back and forth is most likely just cylinder wear, maybe even rings. But the clockwise and counter clockwise i ASSUMED was wristpins..

So i wiggled the piston in the clock-counter clockwise direction while i watched the  rod bearing caps, and the whole rod and caps move clockwise and counter clock-wise. Its not a huge amount, but doesnt seem right. Anybody have any opinions on what the problem could be? Maybe i need new rods and crank? All 4 pistons/rods to this.

Sorry for the long post, thanks for any help in advance.

Sounds like a complete overhaul is in order. Do it all right now and don't worry about it again for a while.

I am rebuilding the whole thing. Im just wondering what causes the whole rod and bearing cap to "wiggle" like that. Maybe the bearings are so worn out? Id like to know the problem so i can make sure the machine shop is aware of it. thanks.

Have you removed the rod caps yet? I bet you will see copper. How much noise did this engine make?

Mainly rattled at high speeds either on the gas or off. Nothing horrible though. I always blamed the timing chain, but the noises persisted after a new chain install. The only rod cap i removed was the number 2, i may leave the others so i can show the machine shop this problem, unless you guys can pinpoint it. Ill check out the bearings more closely tomorrow.

Most likely am i looking at just badley worn bearings, or should i be in the market for new rods and a crank? Im sure the machine shop will be the only one that can tell me that for sure :-\ Thanks alot for the help.
