Driveline noise
« on: Apr 26, 2004, 01:20:13 PM »
Ok, Something is making a grinding noise when coasting at higher rpms in fourth and fifth gear.  I'm pretty sure that its not my transmission (I just got a new one from Marlin), and I saw on another post that it could be my pinion bearing.  It does kinda sound like a bearing noise and I do have a bit of a driveline vibration.  There isn't a whole lot of play in the bearing though, so I was wondering if it could be something else.  Its not really irritating, so I might just wait until it gets worse or breaks, then I will know for sure what is wrong with it.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.  I've already done the whole jack it up run it with the tires off the ground thing, and the noise seemed like it was gone or at least a whole lot quieter.

Another reason why I was thinking it might not be the pinion bearing is that it seems to go with engine rpm and not speed.

Yes, I replaced it, but bad pilot bearings don't make noise when the truck is in gear because they are not turning.

I don;t know about the grinding noise but i have mad vibrations after installing my dual cases in 3,4 and 5th gears.  May just be my rear driveshaft.

You need to put a CV on that rear driveline or change your pinion angle more than likely

NP, thanks anyway.   Honestly, I took my driveshaft out and there was no play in the pinion or the transfer case flange.  So, no dice there.  I'm beginning to think that its just my clutch fork vibrating at a certain rpm, because its got some play in it and it makes noise at idle.  So, I don't think its a really big deal.  I actually had a problem kinda like this before with a mustang that had a wore out clutch fork.
