I'd like to find a place near Stockton, CA to wheel. I am a total newb to wheeling with an 85 pickup full stock. It's running strong. So if anyone know a place please let me know. I've heard of the Rubicon but it is a little far for a one day trip.

What exactly do you consider "near" stockton? You could wheel Niagara Rim (up Hwy120), the Eagle Peak Trail (Hwy120...if it's still open) Board's Crossing (up Hwy 4 past Arnold) I did all of those with a stock 84.


If none of those options are good, there's always the mall.

I'd like to go and try Niagara Rim, but another site recomends it for more advanced 4x4 and a locker. Think it's true?

no way.  I've been through it in 2 trucks.  an 84 std cab, 31s, 4.88s, no lift, etc.  no problem, just a little rough ride.   And I've been thru in my current 84 Xtracab, 4.88s, 33s, Dual Cases (2.28s) and around 4.5"-5" of lift.  Both trucks were open/open when I went; I haven't made it back there now that I have the detroit. 

That was actually my virgin trip in my first toy!

Last time I went thru, I went with a mostly stock 83 and mostly stock 85.  I mean 4.10s, single cases, and 33s...they burned the clutch a little, but made it.  Hell, one of them even showed me up a little (bigger balls and a spotter).

as long as you pay attention, yeah.  take your time and pick a line.  And an auto would probably be better than a manual in a semi-stock truck.  With small tires and stock suspension, you really have to learn to pick a good line, or you end up stuck.  I think everyone should have to wheel like that for a while; I know I did.

I'll tell you the same thing I tell everyone else...."I can spot you through it!"

not semi-stock, full stock. And I've heard it's more fun to wheel stock, at least for what I'm doing. It's more challenging and it forces practice an dgood lines. Not to mention it is cheaper at first.
