Anyone running remote oil filter?
« on: Jul 03, 2007, 08:20:14 AM »
I should be dropping my 22RE into 89 pickup tonight and along with a new 3000 cfm electric fan, I am also adding dual remote oil filters.

With all of the lines and wires on the passenger side of the engine bay, it is looking like it may be a challenge to mount the oil filter bracket.

Where did you mount your oil filter bracket?

Thanks
Ken

Put mine right below the battery, but I have a single filter.

Remote filter adaptor on block
stainless lines to single filter mount just behind battery (made my own bracket to mount the adaptor)
Oil cooler adaptor (with thermostat) on filter mount
stainless lines to engine oil cooler in front of radiator

I ran one for a while and it was taken off and thrown away. those extra rubber hoses and junk are just more stuff to go wrong, and can cause real serious damage If/when they do fail.
The only plus is easier oil change but If your that lazy take it into the quik-e-lube...

Yeah I was planning on running one for a while but after I lifted it more and did a drop box the filter was so easy to access I just canned the idea. Seemed like more work than it was worth. I would love to do one on my honda however, because that is a major PITA to get to. Damn ground hugging cars. :tantrum:

Thank you for the information.

There are 3 reasons why I want to do this.
1) I will gain about a 1 1/2 quarts of oil.
2) With the filters standing straight up instead of laying on their side, I can fill the filters before installing.
3) I hate having the oil drain all over the side of the block when I change filters.

Thanks again.

All valid reasons. Just curious what you are using as a hose to run from the block to the oil filter.

I run a second oil filter to filter oil going directly to my turbo.
Note, after reading about oil filters I'll never use one of these FRAM units (shown in photo) again.
I use braded stainless lines rated for oil/fuel, capable of well over 200psi.
Ain't cheap though...

Did you have to have them custom made or were you able to find them localy? Also, whats wrong with Fram? What do you recommend instead?

their filters are junk.  Not a lot of filter media/poor construction.

Just cut open a fram and a napa one(wix), and look at the difference.  I counted 32 pleats on the fram, and over 50 on the napa.  both were for the same engine too.

You know, we used to have one of those displays on the counter at work, a fram and a Napa (Wix) cut open, side by side...really can change one's opinion of a filter.

edit: sorry for the hijack.

The top of the line Fram is pretty good, but, still not as good as Wix or NAPA Gold which is made by Wix. The Perulator Pure One is also very good, but from what I've been reading on the web is that the Amsoil AE is the best with the K&N a very close second.

I got my engine in yesterday and the more I look at everything like the airconditioner and the new electric fan, I'm not going to have very much room and may need to reconsider the remote.

I'm gonna keep looking, but I don't want the filters anywhere that they can get hit by rocks and if I need to tip them on their side that blows the idea of filling them first.

Thanks for the help, now I need to figure out what to do about this new Centerforce clutch :smack:

what about the clutch?

I installed a new dual friction Centerforce clutch and now it has way to much freeplay at the pedal. If I adjust the rod all of the way out (no threads in the nut) it is just about perfect.

I see in my repair manual that the clevis for the V-6 might be longer than the 22RE.
Anybody know if thats true and if so, how much longer is it?

Oh okay. Thats good because I usualy use napa, it is just further away from my house. kragen is the closest to my house so sometimes if im lazy i just get my filters there. Thanks for the info i will make a note not to let laziness prevent me from getting Napas.
