shocks and marlin springs
« on: May 02, 2007, 02:14:16 PM »
i cant figure out why marlin sells shocks that only extend 14" but have springs that articulate 21"???
im gonna mount my shocks on top of my axle and use a rear hoop to get maximum extension on my shock. has anyone done this before? what size shock should i run and what type is best for a little desert and a little rock crawling down here in san diego??
rebuilt 22R, downey header long tubes, 2.5" exhaust, 4 inch marlin lift with 3 inch shackles, detriot locker, 4.88's on 33's.marlin cross over steering and fror crossmember, power steering conversion, chromoly 30 spline bobby longs, 86+ wider rear axle, 12 inch 5150's all around, fully gusseted with armor...soon to be sitting on 35 bfg MT with an all pro roll cage and rock lights!

the 21 inches is at the wheel not the shock mounting point

90% of the people out there don't have their suspension set up correctly to use 14" shocks to begin with.

if you mount them front to back you will get more out of them since they will help fight axle wrap and regular up and down duties.  :driving:

you can mount the shocks like stock, put the mounts on the axle not on the top but on the uper sides like 10 and 2 o-clook and inborard them (move them closer to the center) like 2 or 3 inches in on each side, i did that and it works hela good. but they will have to stick up throug your bed.

Have you thought of getting the shock mount kit available from sky that goes in between the framerails? I got one on my '83 and it works real well and is strong plus pretty easy to weld in.

They also seem to have the right geometry to get alot out of your shocks. . .

True, but when you do you can mount your shocks triangulated and on the back of your axle, and still max out the 14" travel shocks.
