Tire Fitment?
« on: May 16, 2007, 09:06:44 AM »
I started wondering about this last night when my buddy stopped by with his 85 Runner. I was looking over his truck and noticed some rub marks on the rear frame rail, asked 'hey, do the tires rub in the rear?' 'yea, I don't worry about it.'
So his rim and tire combo is 33x12.50R15 MTRs on some 15x8 steelies with 3.75" of back spacing. I start to worry a bit.

I plan to run 37x14.00-15LT Iroks on 15x10s with 3.75" of back spacing on my my 82 Pick up, am I going to have rubbing issues?

Change the rear axle to 86 & up or put on wheel spacers

I'm running 86 rear axle, 1.5" wheel spacers, 2" backspace wheels, and still rub, just higher now.
Really depends on how much flex you will have.

I'm not sure how good it's going to flex, decent I hope.
I'm wondering if I should just go to 2" BS'd wheels.

i have 3rd gen v6 housing sitting round you can buy. I was going to throw it on because its articulates better and is wider but im too lazy. It comes with axles too. needs a rebuild though. 1.5" front spacers and this would look good.
Starting from scratch again...

They will rub.   They will rub a lot.  This will limit your flex because the frame will limit your up travel.  This also kills the leverage on the axle and will limit the drop on the opposite tire.  It basically just sucks.  Avoid this if you can.

To keep youre tires off the frame, you will need more than just the longer axle.  My 35"-37" do rub alittle.  (But you might be ok depending on how high you're lifted.)

This is with 33"(measured 31.5"), 63" Chevy's(well, 65"), with the stock 1st gen axle, and about 3" suspension lift, on 3.25"' BS rims.  Flex dramatically improved when I put the longer axle in(no other mods), this got the tires far enough out that they didn't touch the frame and allowed the axle to do it's thang.

And that is my official "Why the hell won't this tire drop anymore than this?" look.    :D

hahaha, thanks for the pic.

Trying to find an IFS rear axle on the cheap.
Think I'm going to go with some 36x13.50s instead.

Alright, found an IFS rear axle for the truck for $150.
I'm assuming it will just bolt right in place of my 82 axle, correct?

yes.

you will need to modify the e-brake cable.   if possible, grab the one off the truck you got the axle from.  (that's the easiest.)

Oh, depending, the pumpkin flnage will have a different hole pattern,  so redrill flange.

If junk yard axle, or one sitting, be prepared to rebuild the damn thing.  (another ~150 depending)

While you have the new one out, SHAVE the drain plug off.  If you visit rocks frequently, you will be glad you did!!!

You can also swap flanges.
If you take the axle apart then yes, swap the flange. If it's ready to go then try to get the d-line that the axle came out of & swap the flange from the doaner d-line to you d-line. This way you don't have to worry about replacing the crush sleeve or the seal. The other option is to take a first gen flange & set it on the wider axle flange. Make sure the holes are offset from the larger holes. Mark & drill the new flange. It will now be drilled for the small & large bolt pattern  :twocents:

I can swap the flanges. I'll grab the e-brake cable too, thanks boys.

For shaving the drain plug off, what's the best thickness of metal to use? Shouldn't be too hard to weld it up.

Not to hijack, but would the 3rd out of my 84, bolt into an IFS rear?  I want to go to the wider rear axle, but i want to make sure i can put my 3rd into it (b/c of the spool and the 5.29's).

Any other tricks for the swap other than just grabbing the e-brake cable?
