Clutch Recomendations
« on: Apr 15, 2007, 08:08:34 PM »
Hello, I have a 1984 Toyota 4runner with a 22r and a five speed.  I have been talking about replacing the clutch since last summer, but have not gotten around to replacing it yet.  My throwout bearing is going so now every time I use the clutch it sounds like it has a belt slipping.  I usually only use the clutch in first and reverse so I should be fine for a little while before it seizes.  I am planning on pulling the engine as soon as I can to convert to a dual row timing chain from LC Engineering, and to replace the clutch.  What do you guys suggest for a clutch, I am looking at the ceramic clutch kit from Marlin.  Would you suggest the 1200 lb unit or 1600 lb one, or maybe something different altogether?  Thanks in advance.

had the tranny out last spring  and the clutch still looked new

whats to pros and cons of the ceramic verses non ceramic, Im also working on my sas'ed Daily Driver, with loc-rites front and rear
Sand, what fun, drop pressure to 12psi, stock tires are still digging, can't afford to get stuck, 8psi, still not working. Find a place to GET OUT, air up, un-lock hubs,  WAIT whats this, hubs are UN-LOCKED already. 2wd, 8psi, stock tires, Oregon sand dunes.

What is the difference between a ceramic vs. non-ceramic clutch?  I know ceramic clutches grip better and have a higher tolerance to heat and RPM's but what are the negative side effects?

they engage hard really hard, making feathering almost impossible, glazing the pucks is almost a garuntee. Good for road/mud bad for Rock/trails. Stick with the stocker. the best of both worlds and with the price you can almost buy 2 stocks to 1 ceramic. which do you think will last longer? :)

hell, i run the 1600 ceramic clutch in my daily driver and i love it, after a week you get the feel to it and there is no lost traction... but of course i have been driving tractors and trucks since i was like 6 so i have used a lot of ceramics... but if your leg isnt that strong and you dont want to try as hard to shift smooth, get the stocker... i personnally wont go anything but ceramic now!! you cant hardly slipp them, mine will break the tires loose before slipping or killing the engine!! it's all on your preference!!!

On a daily driven vehicle ceramic clutches will warp or crack the flywheel. The same thing applies for ceramic brake pads.

When's the last time you pulled the transmission and looked at the flywheel?

I have never personally hear of anyone warping or cracking a Flywheel with a ceremic, i bought a ceremic for my DD and i cannot wait to put it in. It all depeneds on your prefrences, do you want a clutch that is going to engage really really hard, or one that you can slip to make a smooth take off??? It's all in what you want...

you can make ceramics engage smooth, trust me, but if you dont know how to drive with stiff clutches it'll take a while to not make it so jumpy!! i'd like to know if dirtchicken has ever actually USED and ABUSED one of these badboys!! Seriously....

just fyi,  the marlin  NON ceramic clutch  is no where near a stock clutch, a stock clutch has around 800psi clamp pressure,  marlins are either 1200 or 1600

i have  the "conventional" 1200 lb clutch  drives smooth  but  i can easily   spin the tires befor it slips  when fully engaged

i have also driven  pickups  with ceramics  and  Marlins Buggy  ,  they are  either on or off,  great for a buggy  sucks very much bad  if your trying to tow  a small trailer with your daily driver

the Peterbilt  i drove  on my last  job  had a ceramic  and it sucked,   and  for 14 years  i drove  rigs  from coast to coast,  in  a  Kenworth i had  , the 18 spd  gave me enough options  the  ceramic  clutch  was great, :psss:  besides the 600hp  Detroit deisel,

in other trucks  not so good

like the Peterbilt i drove last,  it  was geared too high  for  Logging  and  it had a ceramic,  basically  i had to always  take off out of the woods  in lo  because  if the tires  didnt spin  it  would kill the   3406 caterpillar ,  or  lift the front tires off the ground,

it  just depends  on what your driving,  but i promise you ,  if its in a daily driver  you wont like a ceramic clutch,  BUT  you CAN  have a Heavy duty  clutch  get the 1200 or 1600  Marlin "conventional" clutch

I had a 1600-lb conventional Marlin in my 85 truck and it worked great.  It was positive enough that I have a 1200-lb conventional in the 89 4Runner that I hope to get on Friday.  If your running 35 or smaller tires the 1200-lb should be great and larger tires I would probably go with the 1600-lb.  I will soon find out if I made a good choice.  I thought that the 1600-lb was a little too agressive on the rocks in Moab.  It made a few things more difficult than when I was running a stocker.  Don't get sucked into the bling factor of ceramic, the conventional clutches will perform extremelly well and are more forgiving I suspect.

ive got the marlin 1600 conventional, it kicks butt. i have also used a centerforce dual friction, it was way better than stock, but no where near as smooth or as positive as the marlin clutch is

I 'm using an LC pro clutch and 30 LB. flywheel. It has been running for years with F+R lockers, 35's, etc.
Havn't let all the smoke out of it yet....I'm impressed......
My buddy has the Marlin 1600lb, and pedal pressure is really easy, and it holds very well. Even with a strong LC motor. :twocents:
