testing a trans before buying

are here any ways to see if a manual trans is in decent shape before i buy it.
found a r151 that i have been looking for for forever and i cant afford a dud.
any ideas?

grab the input shaft,  if it wiggles more than a mm  at the tip,  its  worn,  if it moves alot  buy it anyway, but dont spend more than $150  then send it to Marlin for a core

I've always ran it throught the gears and turned the input shaft and made sure the rear output turned with it.  Not really a whole lot more I do but I've been lucky thus far with that method. :thumbs:
