Marlin Landcruiser Gears
« on: Jan 20, 2007, 05:50:10 PM »
Ok, I know about the Toy box, but what happened to the crawler gears that Marlin used to make?  I found an article about them in a 4Wheeler magazine I think from about ten years ago.   I am in desperate need of some slowness but I don't want to go duals in my 76 FJ55 and want to keep it all Toyota.  So what are my options?  I need some Marlin quality gears in my T-case.

Yeah I do want one.  Too bad they are thrice my budget and I'd be paying for way more reduction than I want or need.  I think I'm going to try and find a early transfer case with the lower gears and figure out how to brace the piss out of it, then mate it to an H41 (foreign) 4 speed. That will put me at a crawl ratio of 46:1.  58% higher than I have now.  Anybody done this?

I have a 3 speed case with the lower gears out of a 72 fj40 that I need to get rid of.  PM me if you are interested.

I'm doing this on my brothers cruiser. I put 3spd (2.31) gears into a 4spd case and used a 16x29 tooth input gear to match the ratio and the H41's 16 spline shaft.

Where did you get the crossover gear?  And what is involved in swapping the housings?  That would be the best of all worlds if I could keep the somewhat stronger case.

What all is involed in swaping the 3-speed gearset into the 4-speed case? I have a good 4-speed trans with a junk 4-speed case, but a good 3-speed Tcase in a box.... I could put them into my "Tinker Toy" cruiser and avoid having to do a centerd rear axle...

sorry for the hijack...

To put a 3spd gearset in a 4spd case takes some shimming but is a simple task.

The 16 spline gear you need is called a transition gear and it comes from an early '74 FJ40.  The 4spd trans came out something like 3 months before the T-case gears changed.

The 3spd case can be bolted to the 4spd trans with the use of the transition gear.

Yeah, I know how to do a 3 speed case to a 4 speed tranny with the special gear, but the 3 speed gears in the 4 speed housing is what I'm trying to figure out.  Will it be obvious where and how thick I need shims?  Is this the best thing to do if I have a three speed case, a four speed case, and the transition gear?

Does somebody have a picture of this "transition gear?"

Also, Marlin has replacement shafts with a 10 spline. Not sure if it has been done, but should work in theory. No need for the special gear. But, you have to disassemble the 4 speed.....................which is more work.

The gear looks like the rest but with 16 splines. It is from a non-us application where they put the older case behind a 4 speed. I just heard they have a R151 mated to a lc splitcase in Russia........go figure

The cluster/idler gear is narrower for the 3 speed. You will have to add shims to both sides of it. The thickest factory one on either side will get you in the ball park.

We have the gears.$75. I think the 4spd case was about .108 larger inside. So a .054 of shim on each side of the idler is a good place to start.
