Rebuild 2F or swap out?
« on: Nov 23, 2006, 09:31:27 AM »
Customer has an '83 FJ60 LandCruiser with a 2F motor and the H42 4-speed manual transmission. Told me he took it to a mechanic who said bad compression on one of the cylinders.

He would like to keep it stock, which means a rebuild, but since it revs high going 65 on the interstate, wants a 5-speed tranny.
Looked on the net, an H55F 5-speed with all the fixin's is $2300.

Good engine rebuild kit is about $1700. not including reground crankshaft. I find this shocking, as 'my' 22R motor kits run me $300?

Not sure of his funding, but if it were me...i'd just swap in a 4.3L Chevy V-6, with an adapter bellhousing mating it to a G54 5-speed Toyota truck tranny/ t-case. Stock specs on the 2F are 135HP @ 3600, w/ 210ft.lbs. of torque @ 1800, going to a 4.3 you'd prolly lose some torque but go up to 180-200HP. If it ever needed rebuilt it'd be cheap too.

As i say, he may not care about the money and just go for the "Restoration" rebuild, just trying to get some opinions as to how i should advise him.

Don't yank a 2f because of a bad compresion reading. make sure it's not a burnt valve or something. A 2f is built like a cummins, stout.

yea  that  135  might not seem like much  but those "F" engines have V8 torque,   and are  "like a Cummins"  in  bullet proofness

i would  go V8  long befor a 4.3  in a landcruiser

or  a ford  300 inline 6  ,  bigger displacement than the 2F  and comes with efi,  and  maybe a 5 speed  if you shop around
