Binding 4th gear synchro???
« on: Feb 09, 2004, 11:26:15 PM »
Checked out my spare G52 - prior owner said it was stuck in gear. 4th worked, but no others. Pulled the cases apart- no stucky in gear. But the 4th gear synchro is acting as if it were stuck to the input gear and is binding. Sprayed some brake clean on it and it moves a bit easier, but not like the others. Do suspect some has been inside recently - new gaskets and a loose bolt at the shifter bucket. Other that that it look very good.  Could it just be a new synchro that has yet to wear in??? Should I just reassemble, oil and run it??

When the trans is apart, the 4th syncrow will be tighter, because the front case and the o.d. snap ring on the input bearing sets the spacing and end movrment. It will be tighter when apart. Push the 4th gear syncrow against the input gear and measure the air gap. There must be a 0.020 air gap or the syncrow will need to be replaced.
When you reassemble the trans, remember to seal the 8 nose cone bolt threads, or they will leak oil!

Thanks Marlin! Gonna use the G52 so at least we can drive the truck for now. Will call you in the AM to order some gaskets.
