How do you get the stick out of shifter housing? L52
« on: Jul 22, 2006, 09:01:42 AM »
Asking questions again. Thanks in advance for all the replies. I'll be watching for the replies since I'm in the process of mounting my new L52 HD.

I'm trying to get my shifter out of the shifter housing. Seems that there are two small shafts on either side of the top cover. Do these get punched out or ???? Also, how does the spring come out of the top?

My new L52 has the two small shafts already in place. They don't look like their supposed to come out. It would be nice to just swap the two top shifter covers but their already sealed and mine's a mess with all the old water based gear oil in it. :smack:

Can anyone here shed some light on this for me. I'm needing transportation for Monday! :sheerterror:

SST stands for special service tool if I remember correctly. It is all the "fancy" expensive tools Toyota made to do certain tasks. The FSM tells you what each one of them is, but they aren't necessary. They just make things alot easier.

i always use some needle nose pliers  and open them,  insirt into the square part  around the shifter base,  about the size of a nickel,  like KYOTA said, push down and twist it counterclockwise and it and the spring will pop up  then you can just lift it out

If you need any sst here is the link to buy any sst toyota makes. http://toyota.spx.com/index.aspx

I purchased the shifter tool and it really helped. If your not careful you could damage the transmission if you dont use the tool. Thats what I did then decided to use the right tool for the job. It cost like 65.00 bucks.

$65 dollars?  I already have a hammer and big screwdriver.   Counter clockwise to get it off.  Hit is at about 45 degrees.

And what did you damage and what were you using to pull the shifter?

I damaged the shifter tower. The part the shifter slides into. I was using a skrew driver and a hammer. Maybe mine was a little harder to get off due to the truck sitting for a long period. I also think water got into the transmission rusting some parts. Anyways I though others may want to have the link to the sst tool supplier.
