MUD RACE TOY
« on: Oct 11, 2006, 09:31:18 AM »
Hello to everyone

New to forum, and new to Toyota, I have a 81 Toyota 4x4, that I bought for 650.00, I took the truck to Mexico, and a friend invited me to the mud races, next thing you know I’m in line running against a 4 cylinder jeep, you know who won (my Toyota).
Know I just need suggestion on what I can do to the Toyota to make it run more; I want to stay with the 4 cylinder engine. I will just use this as a toy not a dd. A mud racing toy, any ideas, suggestion

34 X 9.50 Super Swamper TSL's for tires (Maybe Boggers), spool rear(weld), Lock-right front, mild 2-3" lift, you will do well.

I ran a similar setup in the 80's and did very well against V6's in the 38" and smaller 4/6 Cylinder class in the local mud-bogs in upstate New York. Always placed in thetop 3 and one several events.

38 12.5 TSl's and welded diff's 5.29 gears.

Had a friend that used to clean up at the boggs with his Tayota till I built my Toyotafied Nissan with the 3.0 V6. Running the above setup.  Only differance was he had a 22R.

BTW  :worthless:

O.k. Next step, weld the rear, and probably the front, buy the header and straight 2 ¼ pipe, I will leave it with no muffler or cat converter. Lift it just 3".

Tire, I will stay with the thin mud tires. And will a 20R head help, or just stay with the 22R.

Thanks for the help

20r head will give more compression but do not forget the 20r intake(22r intake will not fit). it also helps to get bigger valves too.

Well if the truck is running right now, do the supension and tires for now...gears and diffs as well, and see how your 22r does...then make decisions about motor mods.  And take video.
IFS is best kept at ambient temperature in a pile of scrap in the backyard.  When kept under a functioning vehicle, it tends to greatly diminish said vehicle's offroad ability.     -reklund5

my personal preference for tires would be 33-1250 boggers

3 inch lift  :yesnod:

wait till you have engine problems to  play with it,  but  a 20R head and intake on a 22R block is good for racin  :woohoo:

try the tires I run the bfg 33x10.5x15 mt. They work good and mines only 4x2. I have not run the mud race in a sanctioned event but at the lake bottom mud flats on a U shaped run. I can beat 4x4 rangers, a jeep here and there and most of the full size redneck rockets. (the z71 with 285's and straight pipes)
