Rear Diff. issues.
« on: Sep 23, 2006, 11:33:20 AM »
Alright, my rear diff is leaking from the front. I'm new to this stuff so i don't exactly know what might be the problem. I believe that it might be what the chilton manual refered to as the "oil seal"   what do you  guys think? and if it is that do i have to take the entire diff apart or can i get to it from the driveshaft side? thanks in advance for the help.

it is the pinion seal.  all you need to do is take the driveline off.  then there is like a 30mm nut or so, take that off.  then you can pull the pinion flange off and the dust guard off.  the seal will come off after that.  just put it back together the same way.  i am not sure how to tighten the pinion nut.

detailed directions in chiltons, haynes or FSM. Make sure you measure the preload on the pinion shaft nut within the backlash of the drive pinion and gear ring. U will need to know this preload  when u re-assemble. Other than that its a piece o' cake.

what he is trying to say,  use a torque wrench  and the force it requires to remove it  is  the amount you need to tighten it

by any chance can anyone give me the torque specification for that pinion nut? unfortunately the previous owner had been into the diff and screwed stuff up. the nut was almost half off when i got to it so i was unable to check the preload and all that. once again, thanks in advance.
