gears, gears, gears?????????
« on: Sep 18, 2006, 04:57:44 PM »
okay, thanks for all the help on my previous post.  Turns out one of the spider gears in the rear was missing some teeth.  I think i got to it in time though.  Now i have another question, how do i figure out what kinda gears are in there.  I am pretty sure that they are not stock just because of lift and how smooth it runs and shifts.  Its a 1995 ford 1 ton rear end with limited slip, i think.  Does anyone know what kind i should put in there and how to tell whats in there now?
Thanks

Unless you have a tag on the cover that tells you what is in it, You can put a mark on both rear tires and the driveshaft. Turn both rear tires 1 full turn and count the turns of the driveshaft. That will clue you in on the ratio.

As far as what ratio would be best, That depends on the use, tire size and Hp. You should check some tire/gear charts and go by that.

If the gears are out of the housing and the third is pulled apart just count the number of teeth on the ring gear and divide that by the number of teeth on the pinion.  Thise will tell you what gear set it is.

When the tires have turned one full trun and you counted the number of turns the driveshaft turned inc the fractional amount. That will be the ratio of the gears. If the drive shaft turnes just a little over 4 full truns it will be a 4.10:1.
