« on: Aug 19, 2006, 12:34:03 PM »
Ive got a 94 4Runner with the 3.0 auto...tranny wont shift into 4th/OD unless warmed up (which takes like 10 minutes) and recently Ill be driving down the highway warm and in 4th and all of a sudden my temp. gauge goes down and the tranny gets kicked out of 4th....I checked the fluid, the coolant temp. sensors and it all checked good :dunno: All help will be appreciated  :driving:

Swampy-

The sensors won't throw codes if they're working but not sending the correct signal.  You need to measure the resistance of the sensors as per the service manual to make an accurate assesment of their functionality.

The truck is designed NOT to shift into OD unless fully warmed up, BTW.  The issue of the fluctuating gauge is a problem and needs to be addressed.  Sounds like its a loose connection, which you'll have to trace down...

so  you will have to get a digital ammeter,  and measure the resistance,
Ryan  can this be done by just pulling the connections  or  ???
:psss:  you gotta remember swampy aint the sharpest tool in the shed,  so can you get the proper resistance range from a haynes manual??

The ECU does not allow overdrive in automatic transmissions unless the system is operating in closed loop and warmed up for emissions reasons. It does this so it warms up quicker and results in decreased emissions. Check your manual if you still have it,its in there.  Mike

Check the thermostat. Check the thermostat. Check the thermostat.....

Could be broken or loose in the housing.
Remember that it requires a two stage type.

Get a factory or a Napa replacement.

Ok so i replaced the thermostat and fixed a small crack on the radiator i do have some good news off this it wont pop out of 4th anymore but it still wont shift into 4th unless warmed up but now it only takes 4-5 minutes  and before it was taking up to 15 so that is also good.....i think the radiator might have another little crack in it do you think that might have anything to do with it since its loosing pressure through there?
