Dual Cases and Driveshafts
« on: Sep 13, 2006, 06:29:02 AM »
I was wondering, how those of you with dual case handled the new required driveshaft length.  So far, I have cut, cut to length and re-welded the front drive shaft to length at the fixed yoke end.  The problem with this is it has a fair bit of wobble in it.  The front will not see high speeds and may not be an issue, but I still do not like the wobble.  The rear is going to have a CV joint at the t-case output flange.  I want to get this thing as true as possible because there maybe times when I feel like driving around town and not just on the trails.  I was going to bolt up the CV to the output and bolt up the drive shaft to the diff and hold in place while tacking the shaft to the CV on opposite sides to try an align as much as possible.  Then take it off and fully weld.  I am starting to think though that I should just take it to a shop and get it done right so their will be no issues.

What has everbody else done?  Thanks for the input.

Do just as you indicated above but befor you weld it get a dial indicator under there and measure for run out. You can get them within .0010 you will be fine. They move that much when you weld them. I have done this for years and have lots of them running up and down SoCal freeways with no problems. Some guys have had theirs redone just for the piece of mind but I think even they will tell you it did not make much difference. You don't need high$ dial indicator either. I use HF crap for under the truck. they get dropped too much for the starret stuff under there.

Thanks for the response.  What do you think about the front driveshaft?  Although I really don't want to, I am thinking I should cut the weld and redo it.

you can use a piece  of  3-4 inch angle iron  to align the shaft for welding,  but a lathe is best

start over again.  I should've spent more time, but you know how it goes, with limited time to work, I wanted to just get it done.  I suppose I will take my time and use a dial indicator and get it close and tack it.   I wish I had tacked it the first time and I wouldn't have a full weld to deal with.   :smack:
